What constitutes a cameo vs. first appearance?

AmZoMBiE - also that's what i was come to believe is a cameo, though i still think people use it to mean a quick appearance prior to the 1st full appearance...i.e. punchline with batman 89... which i think works as well...but a very different definition.....
